Creating Abundance and Joy in Your Business

    Saturday, September 10, 2005

    By Denise Michaels

Years ago I was an assistant to a pretty famous mega-bestselling author. Once when I was in his office I heard him in a conversation with a guy who wanted him to get into a business with my boss.

The author said, "I think you have a great idea here and you're going to do very well with it but I'm not going to get into this - and here's why. I only get involved with businesses where I know that I'm going to love what I'm doing and be passionate about it. Very often you put some time and money into a business and then later you really get pulled into it - and I only want to get pulled into businesses where I know I'm going to love what I'm doing."

That was like the cosmic 2 x 4 to the side of the head. I'd never even considered anything like that before but it made perfect sense. It's helped me avoid getting involved in other ventures just because it sounded like a money-maker, or I felt for someone. It also helped me to sidestep all the MLMers who saw me as "a natural." Nothing wrong with MLM some people are passionate about that kind of business - it's just that I don't want to sell other's products.

Two years ago I worked for several months with a woman who was really a bear about creating businesses that were residual in the way they make money so that she wasn't always working, working, working - ala Michael Gerber and "The E-Myth" books. I'd heard that concept before of course - but I never knew anyone who actually DID it. When she and I stopped working together I decided that:

    1. I was only interested in promoting my own stuff - my book, teleclasses, etc. I didn't want to get caught up in other people's businesses. If I was coaching or consulting them - that's different. Joint venture agreements can work, too.

    2. I was only interested in creating NEW streams of income that are residual in nature. That means that they can run on their own with minimal involvement from me - that's the business model right from the get-go. In doing that - at times I've moved forward more slowly than I might've if I were to jump into everything that just "sounds good." In fact one ryzer even was so audacious to say that I should've moved forward more quickly. But she had no idea what my long term goals were. You really have to think - can this be residual in the way it produced revenue or is the business model such that it can be systemized?

My longer term goal is to be a global citizen and have my home here in Las Vegas, a villa in Mexico and an apartment in Paris. I love travel, I love entertaining and hanging out with friends. I also enjoy having time for health and physical fitness. If I have a business that's humming along so that I don't have to put as much time into it I want to be able to do these things and others.
